All week long leading up to the Troy game, the coaches and players we the media were allowed to talk to expressed how focused they were in preparation, but it didn’t show on the football field Saturday evening.
Here we are four weeks into the season and some teams are starting to find identity while others are still searching for theirs. I like the idea of these State of the Union-type columns every few weeks, so here goes my observations going into Week 5.
This was September of 1971. Alabama had just unveiled a surprise Wishbone offense and stunned No. 3 Southern Cal at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, reversing a three-touchdown defeat the year before.
Around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, it set in for Southern Miss fans. Their Golden Eagles had just beaten an SEC opponent – the third of three upsets from the Southeastern Conference – and the Jay Hopson era had begun with a bang.
