Sumrall students explore engineering
About 30 Sumrall High School juniors and seniors participated in a daylong workshop at Mississippi Power Company’s Hattiesburg office to explore their interests in different engineering activities.
The program, titled “I Can! Girls in Engineering,” provided hands-on activities in different areas of engineering, according to MPC spokeswoman Ann Holland.
“We have four different areas of engineering that are divided into stations,” she said.
“There is chemical engineering, where they combine materials to make lip gloss,” Holland said.
“ In mechanical engineering, they follow instructions to make a race car. They finish a project in electrical engineering and they make sandals in industrial engineering.”
Holland said the program is offered to one high school every year.
“This keeps the girls very involved,” she said.
“The girls are able to see their potential in different engineering jobs. We always ask for a diverse group of girls to be involved in the program.”
The girls also heard from Mississippi Power Company employees and interns in different engineering jobs in the company to learn what was involved in the programs.
College and community college representatives were on hand to provide information about their schools.
