Petal High School surpassed their goal and delivered 1,144 books to benefit a high school library in Kenya as part of the African Library Project.
The company building a billboard on U.S. Hwy. 11 located on 16th Section Lands was denied a permit by the Lamar County School District’s Board of Trustees at its meeting Monday night in Purvis. School Board members expect the issue to come before a judge to be decided.
The first event new Veterans Activities Director Patricia Thompson has in the books is a Veteran’s Social Gathering on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The event is for veterans and their spouses to meet other veterans, exchange stories, ask questions, form friendships and just reach out to others.
Shortly after retiring from the military, Patricia Thompson found herself in a city far from her hometown with more free time than she was accustomed to. In Petal, she found a home and a new focus for herself, which is what she hopes to do for other veterans in the area.
English Language Arts and Mathematics state test results are in for third grade through to high school students for the 2016-17 school year.
“I am proud of what they were able to do in this past school year to prepare our students for the test,” said Petal School District Superintendent Dr. Matt Dillon.
City officials said they cannot renovate or stabilize what’s standing of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, although a vast majority of people who attended Tuesday’s public hearing on the subject favored restoration of the church.
The tragedy that struck Charlottesville, Virginia, last week has left much uncertainty and disarray in its wake. The aftermath of the white nationalist rally resulted in one death and approximately 34 injuries.
The fallout has not been solely physical. Protests have broken out across the country, and Hattiesburg is no exception.
