Loretta “Lorrie” Sykes, a volunteer firefighter in Lamar County for two years, was remembered as a giving, serving and well-rounded person during her funeral service Monday.

When the deadly EF-3 tornado ripped through southern Hattiesburg on Jan. 21, the destructive force of the winds and rain was in plain sight for many people. Trees, lumber, shingles and anything that could be moved was picked up and moved or destroyed.
Dale Lucus said he thinks about recent pipeline explosions that have been deadly when he thinks about working on a road in one of the northernmost parts of Lamar County. The Alabama pipeline explosion usually comes to mind.
Dr. Steven Hampton has resigned as Petal High School principal and will serve the Petal School District in a new role later this year.
Hampton will finish the year as principal, but will take on a new leadership position for the next school year.
