Purvis Senior Perry Captures National Merit Scholar TitleBy BUSTER WOLFE,
For 17-year-old Purvis High School senior John Perry, being outdoors is how he hopes to spend most of his life.
Perry, the son of Mark and Suzie Perry, was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist recently and hopes that his prospective college work in geological engineering will allow him time to be out of the office.
“I wanted to go into engineering,” Perry said. “And I thought this would give me a chance to do a lot of field work.”
Perry said he enjoyed his agricultural classes at Purvis High School.
“I like doing stuff like that,” he said. “My dad is a forester, so he spends a lot of time outdoors.”
Naturally, Perry’s hobbies include hunting and fishing. He also enjoys playing the banjo.
Other than the ag classes, mathematics and calculus have been some of his favorites. “Definitely not English,” he said.
Perry has been accepted to the Barksdale Honors School at the University of Mississippi after he made a 35 on his ACT.
Other Pine Belt National Merit Scholarship Finalists include Gracie Holman of Petal High School, August Sohbian Thriffiley of Sacred Heart Catholic High School and Hannah Cantrell, Julianna Hinton and Ryan Davis, all of Oak Grove High School.
