Residents urged to lock cars

Drivers are giving burglars a helping hand when it comes to thefts and break-ins of motor vehicles, according to a police spokesman.

Hattiesburg Police Lt. Jon Traxler, the department’s public information officer, said doing two simple things would help fight auto burglaries.

“Ninety to 95 percent of the cars that are broken into are left unlocked,” he said. “Just locking your car is a big deterrent. And having items in the car visible or leaving anything of value in the car is not good. Most of the reports have been in certain places with lots of vehicles, so sometimes it is easy to walk up to cars and not look suspicious.”

Traxler said unfortunately vehicle, commercial or residential burglaries are signs of other crimes to come.

“A lot of times, one crime leads to another,” he said. “If you actually follow a crime from the start, there is a possibility that drugs can become involved. That just adds to the original crime.”
