JCJC wins fifth straight

ELLISVILLE – The 17th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats continue to post impressive victories.

DeShawn Smith (Brooksville, Florida) scored four touchdowns and Scott Phillips (South Jones) rushed for over 100 yards as JCJC whipped East Central 49-7 here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.

It was the fifth straight victory for JCJC, as the Bobcats improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the MACJC South Division.

During the winning streak, JCJC has outscored its opponents, 229-63, or 45.8 points per game to 12.6 points per game.

The Bobcats had a balanced offense with 207 yards on the ground and 225 yards through the air.

Phillips had 14 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Smith rushed 10 times for 66 yards and three scores and had two receptions for 63 yards and another score.

JCJC limited East Central to 261 yards with 224 of those yards coming in the second half.

Davis Harrison (Lamar School) had two fumble recoveries for the Bobcats.

A blocked field goal set up the first score of the game.

The Warriors were attempting a 33-yard field goal, but it was blocked and JCJC’s Fred Peters (Columbia) returned it 75 yards to the ECCC 18-yard line.

After an unsportsmanlike penalty moved the Bobcats back to the 33, Jones went the distance in four plays. Quarterback Chris Weaver (Bay Minette, Alabama) scored on a draw from 5 yards away. Mike Kroeze’s (Madison Central) extra point gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead with 4:20 left in the first quarter.

Harrison recovered a fumble at the East Central 40 to set up the next score.

The Bobcats would take eight plays to score with Phillips going over from 1 yard out. Kroeze’s kick made it 14-0 with 12:10 left in the second quarter.

On East Central’s next possession, the Warriors moved to midfield. But they would fumble and linebacker Derric Hawthorn (Collins) got the ‘scoop and score’ from 45 yards away. Kroeze’s extra point gave the Bobcats a 21-0 lead with 7:38 left in the second quarter.

On JCJC’s next drive, the Bobcats went 80 yards in nine plays with Smith scoring on a 5-yard run. A 24-yard pass from Detric Hawthorn (Collins) to Jonnas Spivey (Bay Springs) was the big play of the drive. Kroeze’s extra point gave JCJC a 28-0 lead with just 42 seconds left in the first half.

The Warriors struck quickly in the second half for their only touchdown of the game.

They went 82 yards in just three plays on their first possession of the second half. Quarterback Michael Asagunla connected with Octavious Olowo-ake on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Zach Engell’s extra point made it 28-7 with 12:51 left in the third quarter.

JCJC would answer quickly, taking the ensuing kickoff and going 65 yards in just five plays. Smith got the score from 1 yard out on fourth and goal. A 60-yard run by Phillips was the big play in the drive. Kroeze’s extra point gave the Bobcats a 35-7 lead with 10:42 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors would march to the JCJC 19 on its next possession, but turned the ball over on downs.

The entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

JCJC continues division play next week at Pearl River. The Bobcats will face the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Oct. 14 in Poplarville. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv and on the Jones County Junior College Facebook Live page with Mark Easley and Chris Robinson on the call.
