William Carey walks off to advance to World Series

HATTIESBURG – The William Carey Crusaders was the last of the nine-team field to punch their ticket to the NAIA World Series after defeating Southeastern (Fla.) on two consecutive days in the opening round at Milton Wheeler Field on the campus of WCU.

After scoring two runs in the 10th inning Wednesday to force the winner-take-all game Thursday afternoon, the Crusaders’ Wes Brown singled to left to score the winning, walk-off run to give WCU a 10-9 win and a berth to the World Series.

The Crusaders will now travel to Lewiston, Idaho for the NAIA World Series, which begins on May 28.

William Carey jumped up 2-1 after the first inning Thursday, but SEU score three runs in the second inning and two in the third to take an 6-3 lead after three innings. However, the Crusaders scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to 9-8 advantage.

After SEU tied the game in the seventh, WCU got back-to-back singles from Adrian Brown and Larson Barkurn in the ninth to set up Wes Brown’s walk-off single.

Cody Christian led the Crusaders with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate and five RBI, and Wes Brown added a 3-for-5 day from the dish with two RBI. Tyler James and Adrian Brown added two-hit games, too.

After five WCU pitchers combined to give up nine earned runs to SEU, Conner McWilliams pitched the final three innings while only giving up two hits and walk to keep SEU scoreless.
