Lissa Ortego almost had to eat her words. The Oak Grove mother of two knows that parents always say things to inspire their children.
“You can do anything you put your mind to; you’ve just got to try,” Ortego remembered telling her then-11-year-old Cade as he was growing up.
S.F. Carlisle Jr. and his wife, Hazel, were married 63 happy years. In the evenings, they would sit outside their Oak Grove home with a Bible.
“We sat out there about 18 years,” the 87-year-old Carlisle said earlier this week. “I’d read, we’d talk and I’d pray. She didn’t want to read or pray; she wanted me to do that.”
Although three Lamar County fire protection districts have improved their ratings from a Class 8 to a Class 7 last October, residents are not seeing reductions in insurance payments in the Southwest, Southeast and Oak Grove districts.
The Lamar County Board of Supervisors is considering donating toward the purchase of the Gold Star Families monument that will be placed at Camp Shelby this year. Leonard Scardino, who has been working the past two years to have the monument built, said $3,000 is remaining to pay for the display.
Skilled robotics teams from Oak Grove, Sumrall, Petal, Hattiesburg and around the state are practicing right up to this weekend’s Mississippi VEX Robotics State Championship as the University of Southern Mississippi hosts 132 teams at Payne Center.
