Guidry leads offense, Southern Miss claims C-USA Tournament Championship

BILOXI – He’ll be the first to say it. Oak Grove native Matthew Guidry doesn’t play for individual awards. He said it before the season and he repeated it after the Golden Eagles raised the Conference USA Tournament trophy Sunday at MGM Park.

Guidry led the team with a .533 batting average throughout the tournament.

Funeral services announced for former Sumrall Police Chief

Longtime Sumrall Police Chief Willie James Preston will be buried on Saturday after he died earlier this week.

Preston, who was the town’s first black police officer and served as police chief for 17 years, was honored earlier this year when the Mississippi Legislature named a part of Mississippi Hwy. 589 in his honor.





Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church looks to future

The past few years, and the last year especially, have certainly warranted some unfortunate circumstances for Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. However, things are looking up.

Less than a year after reopening its doors following the tornado in 2013, the church suffered extensive damage from the tornado in January 2017.

Faculty, staff, students raise over $6K for Texas school district

Faculty, staff and students in Petal School District have been pinching pennies lately as a way to pay it forward to other districts affected by hurricanes.

After Petal was hit by a tornado in January, numerous school districts reached out to Petal School District to offer assistance.
