Right Way to Throw Away Day set for Saturday

By BUSTER WOLFE,

Have a lot of junk you’ve been needing to get rid of? Between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, the cities of Petal and Hattiesburg, Forrest County and other partnering governmental and community agencies will host the “Right Way to Throw Away Day” at two locations  – Bobby L. Chain Municipal Airport (29 Academy Drive, Hattiesburg) and the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center (99 Central Industrial Row, Purvis).

This event is held annually to provide residents in the greater Pine Belt region the opportunity to properly dispose of  hazardous household waste like cleaners, transmission fluid, bleach and old electronics.

“We all have items around our homes that we aren’t sure about when it comes to throwing them away – from old tires and weed killer to general household cleaning supplies,” said Mayor Toby Barker. “This event allows the public an avenue to place these items in the hands of people who know how to handle them.”

In addition to Petal and Hattiesburg, the following partners also play a vital role in hosting this event: Lamar County, The University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, Pine Belt Regional Sold Waste Authority and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

Attendees at each location can expect to stay inside his or her vehicle and to be guided by a drive-thru process, with all drop-off spaces categorized by item kind (metals, tires, chemicals, electronics, etc.). An environmental services company will collect all items.

Items accepted include: aerosols, all-purpose cleaners, ammonia, anti-freeze, appliances, automobile cleaner, barbecue lighter fluid, batteries, brake fluid, chlorine bleach, detergents, disinfectants, drain opener, furniture polish, herbicides, insecticides, mothballs, motor oils, oil filters, oven cleaners, paint, paint thinner, pesticides, photographic development chemicals, pool chemicals, rodent poison, rubber cement, rug and upholstery cleaner, silver polish, tires, transmission fluid, turpentine, varnish, water sealer, wood finish, computers, laptops, keyboards and monitors, washers/dryers, fluorescent bulbs, TVs, refrigerators and freezers.
