Forrest Co. schools take PREPS awards

Four Forrest County schools were recognized for their achievements by receiving 2018 Value-Added Awards for third- through eighth-grade schools and for high school subject area tests.

The awards will be given out by the Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools (PREPS, Inc.), Mississippi’s only statewide educational consortium. The programmed is headquartered at William College University and Ben Burnett, the WCU School of Education dean, is the PREPS interim executive director.

Rawls Springs Attendance Center and North Forrest Attendance Center received recognition for third- through eighth-grade schools in English Language Arts. In the high school classification, North Forrest High School was singled out in Algebra I, Biology I, U.S. History and English II.

Forrest County Agricultural High School received an award in Biology I.

An awards luncheon and ceremony will be held Feb. 26 at the Jackson Hilton during the 2018 Mississippi Education Partnership Conference hosted by PREPS and MAPE to celebrate achievements and collaborations in schools.

The PREPS Value-Added analysis began in June 1997 and allows for valid comparisons of educational performance on the prior year’s state testing while taking into account the impact of differences in the socioeconomic background of the students considered in the research. The model is used in the PREPS Value Added-Awards Program to identify high-performing schools among Mississippi public school districts who are members of the PREPS Consortium.

Schools that are deemed as adding value are those performing significantly better than other schools with comparable socioeconomic circumstances. PREPS follows the mission of actively providing research and evaluation for public schools.

As a non-profit organization, PREPS is dedicated to serving Mississippi Public Schools. For information about the conference and award presentation, visit the PREPS website at or call (601) 318-6229. This year’s conference theme has a science, technology, engineering and math focus.
