Coleman Center, PRCC plan for open house celebrationBy HASKEL BURNS,
With Petal students returning to school earlier this week, the Coleman Center for Families and Children is teaming up with Pearl River Community College’s Early Childhood Academy to host this year’s “Back to School Fall Kickoff and Open House.”
The event, which is designed for ages 4 and up, will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at the center, 201 West Central Ave. in Petal.
“We are excited about kicking off our fall schedule of events with this fun, family-friendly back-to-school event,” center director Dede Smith said. “Our partnership with PRCC provides an additional layer to the services we can provide to Petal families and children.
“We anticipate a great turnout and look forward to a super busy fall schedule.”
The event will provide hands-on activities designed to facilitate children’s social and emotional development, inquiry, curiosity, early concepts related to numeracy and language acquisition. The activities, which will be provided in the center and outside under tents in the garden, also will focus on STEM, motor development and art.
All of the activities will involve the exploration of bubbles, and families and children are invited to come and go at their own pace throughout the free event. Participants are encouraged to bring a towel and a change of clothes.
“Most importantly, we always strive to align our work with the CFFC’s cornerstones: building relationships, early learning, family support and integrated community services,” Smith said. “This kickoff event touches on each of these cornerstones, making it purposeful and meaningful to those we serve.”
