JCJC baseball sweeps BRCC


ELLISVILLE – No. 1 Jones County posted a pair of close wins over Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) here Wednesday at Community Bank Park.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0, first-inning lead and held on for a 6-5 victory in game one. In game two, JCJC starting pitcher Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) had 10 strikeouts in five innings to help the Bobcats to a 7-5 victory over the Bears.

The Bobcats, 13-1, travel to Eunice, Louisiana, on Saturday where they will play Murray State (Oklahoma) and No. 2 LSU-Eunice.

Baton Rouge, 5-17, meets South Suburban College (Illinois) in Vinton, Louisiana, on Thursday.

Bobcats 6, Bears 5

JCJC got rolling quickly when Trace Henry (Mooreville) walked, Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) singled and Luther Woullard (D’Ibervlle) walked to load the bases. Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left.

With two outs, Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) delivered a two-run single and Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) followed with an RBI double.

BRCC made it 4-1 in the third when Seth Daugherty, Kolby Blanchard and Garrett Barrilleaux singled with one out to load the bases. Hunter David reached on an error, which allowed a run to score, but Brune got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Woullard led off with a double and Hudson followed with an RBI double.

The Bears pulled within 5-3 in the sixth when Cameron Crawford singled and Jonah Overland followed with a two-run home run.

Jones got a run in the seventh when Henry singled and scored on a double to left by Woullard.

BRCC scored twice in the eighth.

Lee Whitaker singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Alex Courtier, who took second on a fielder’s choice. Overland followed with an RBI single. Michael Smith and Samuel Jarrell followed with walks to load the bases and Daugherty was then hit by a pitch to force in a run.

But reliever Bryce Fagan (Petal) got a strikeout to end the inning.

BRCC got the first two runners on base in the ninth on a single and a hit batsman, but Fagan got a double play and fly out to end the game and record his third save.

Starter Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) went six innings and got the win, improving to 3-0. He gave up three runs (two earned), seven hits, walked none and struck out seven. Payton Harris (Oak Grove) went 1.2 innings, allowed two earned runs, two hits, walked two and struck out two. Fagan went 1.1 innings, allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one.

Woullard had two doubles and Mason added two singles. Hudson and McKenzie doubled with Henry, Matthews and R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) getting singles.

Overland homered and singled twice for the Bears. Blanchard and Barrilleaux added two singles each. Daugherty, Whitaker and Crawford had singles.

Starter Brooks Southall went seven innings and was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs, nine hits, walked four and struck out three. Braxton Dufrene tossed an inning, allowed no hits and struck out two.

Bobcats 7, Bears 5

BRCC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Crawford singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jarrell.

The Bobcats came back to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

Hudson, Mason and Hudson Harris (West Jones) walked to load the bases. Miguel Morgan (South Jones) came through with a two-run single and Harris would later score on a passed ball.

Jones went ahead 4-1 in the third when Woullard walked, stole second and third and scored on a groundout by Mason.

BRCC cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth when Hunter David singled, Crawford doubled and Hosey Rogers followed with a two-run single.

JCJC increased the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Morgan. Brown’s single scored Hale. With two outs, Matthews walked and Woullard followed with a two-run double to center.

In the top of the seventh, Blanchard reached on an error to start the inning and Overland singled. Whitaker’s sacrifice fly scored Blanchard and Barrilleaux was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, David reached on an error, allowing Blanchard to score.

But McKenzie got a groundout to end the game.

Brune allowed three runs and six hits as he upped his record to 3-0. D.J. Alexander (Gretna, Louisiana) pitched an inning, allowed two hits and struck out two. McKenzie pitched an inning, allowed two runs (none earned) and one hit.

Bobcat pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Hale, Mason and Woullard doubled with Morgan and Brown adding singles.

Crawford doubled and singled for the Bears with David and Jarrell getting two singles each. Tyler Caston, Rogers and Overland added singles.

Vincent Laurent started for BRCC, lasted one inning, allowed three runs (two earned), no hits, walked three and took the loss. Joseph Battaglia went 4.2 innings, allowed four runs, four hits, walked four and struck out two. Connor Tregre went .1 innings, allowed no runs, one hit and walked one.
