Oak Grove ends season with a shutoutBy BUSTER WOLFE,
Friday night’s Oak Grove homecoming victory against winless Jim Hill of Jackson brought out a lot of smiles on the Warriors sideline and in the home stands.
By halftime, Oak Grove held a commanding 41-0 lead and had dominated the offensive yardage 266-18. With the clock running almost continuously in the third and fourth quarters, the Warriors rolled up a 48-0 win to end the regular season with a winning record (6-5). However, they fell out of the playoffs for the second straight year with a 3-4 District 3-6A mark.
For Oak Grove coach Drew Causey, seeing his seniors on the field for the final game was bittersweet. When he looked for individuals to single out their performance, Causey circled the entire roster.
“The whole team,” he said. “It was just a fun team win. I can’t say enough about those kids; I love them to death.”
Junior quarterback John Rhys Plumlee led Oak Grove to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter before giving over to sophomore signal-caller Landon Forbes in the second quarter. On the first three offensive plays for the Warriors, Plumlee rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He scampered 67 yards over right tackle on the first play from scrimmage for a score; then after not connecting on his first pass, Plumlee dashed 29 yards over right tackle again for his second rushing touchdown.
TD No. 2 came after cornerback Jarius Reimnenq picked off Jim Hill quarterback Delmoney Robinson’s first pass and returned it to the 29-yard line of the Tigers (0-11, 0-7).
Halfway through the first quarter and leading 14-0, Oak Grove started its third offensive series at the Jim Hill 44-yard line after returning a punt. On the fourth play of the drive, Plumlee connected with Kevin Barnett for a 30-yard score and a 21-0 Warriors lead with 5:15 until halftime.
After Jim Hill punted again, Oak Grove got the ball at its own 32-yard line. Plumlee then completed only one of three passes and moved to the Tigers’ 38, where he tossed a scoring pass to Tanner Slay with 0:05 showing on the clock, still in the first quarter and leading 28-0.
Oak Grove scored twice more before halftime, marching 60 yards in eight plays, with senior running back Braxton Betts punching the ball over the goal from 1 yard out with 6:04until intermission. The PAT kick was blocked and the Warriors led 41-0.
Then after Warriors cornerback Ben Johnson intercepted Robinson’s second errant toss at the Jim Hill 25-yard line, Oak Grove’s Landon Forbes – who took over at quarterback – went the distance in three plays. He threw a 19-yard TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Brandon Hayes with 2:10 left until halftime to go into the locker room ahead 48-0.
Things changed in the second half: The scoreboard clock continued to run and Plumlee was seen on the sidelines wearing a coach’s headset. Causey said the junior signal-caller still had eligibility on the field, not as a coach.
“He’s got one more year left,” Causey said with a smile. “So he’s got to give me one more.”
In addition to the final score, the Warriors dominated hapless Jim Hill in all phases. Oak Grove had only one punt during the game – for 45 yards – outgaining the Tigers 305-57 in total yards. Only four penalties were whistled during the entire game.
Causey said he was happy with the performance of his squad. “They played really well, so I’m really proud of these guys.”
